Why should I have PASSHE’s Professional Quality Assured Tutor Membership?
PASSHE Professional QA Tutor Membership means that you are professionally qualified and that your practice is Quality Assured by PASSHE, the leading professional body for specialist 1:1 SpLD tutors working with neurodiverse students in HE.
Quality Assurance ensures that you are actively engaged in relevant continuing professional development (CPD) and Professional Peer Supervision® (PPS).
Once registered, you are assigned a PASSHE QA number unique to you and your name is recorded on PASSHE’s Register of Quality Assured SpLD Tutors. This Register is a public facing document and only your name and QA number will be visible.
What do I need to have in place to become a PASSHE Professional QA Tutor Member?
- You agree to abide by PASSHE’s Code of Ethics
- You abide by the PASSHE’s 7-PrinciplesⓇ underpinning the provision of 1:1 specialist study skills support in HE.
- You hold professional indemnity insurance. This may be provided by your HE institution employers. For Freelance QA tutors, it is recommended that you purchase £5 million cover for public liability and £1 million cover for professional indemnity.
What are the requirements of PASSHE Professional QA Tutors?
PASSHE Professional QA Tutors undertake a three-year membership cycle. During each year of a three-year QA membership cycle Tutors are required to maintain a Portfolio, and reflect on, 10 hours of professional development comprising:
- PASSHE-accredited CPD (5 hours)
- Work-related professional development activities (2 hours)
- Three sessions of Professional Peer Supervision® (equivalent to roughly 3 hours)
The Professional QA Tutor Portfolio
There are two different PASSHE Professional QA Tutor Portfolios with accompanying handbooks:
- PASSHE Professional QA Tutor first Portfolio and handbook for new Professional QA Tutor members.
- PASSHE Professional QA Tutor Portfolio and handbook for renewing/established Professional QA Tutor members, i.e. PASSHE members who have successfully completed their first Portfolio and held PASSHE QA membership for at least 3 consecutive years.
Self-audit
At the end of the first portfolio is a self-audit for Tutors to reflect on, and record, their professional practice context.
What is PASSHE Professional Peer Supervision® (PPS)?
Professional Peer Supervision® has been developed specifically for PASSHE members.
It is based on the peer supervision undertaken by our colleagues in professions like counselling or educational psychology in order to help align the professionalism of specialist tutors with these professional colleagues.
PPS has been specifically adapted to meet the needs of specialist tutors in our unique educational and academic setting and is based on the Action Learning Model.
All PASSHE members can take part in a PPS session.

One of our members recently wrote the following comment about the PASSHE QA portfolio process: “The completion of training for CPD and the reflections required for completing the portfolio continues to be a useful way of ensuring that I update my knowledge and skills and am able to provide support to students with SpLD that are appropriate for their needs. The reflections required for the PPS helps me to be a more reflective practitioner and have allowed me to identify more appropriate ways (and explore new ways) of supporting students and ensure that the support provided is student centred. They also help to reduce / relieve some of the stress I sometimes feel in my efforts to provide quality study skills support to students that will help them to succeed academically in line with their abilities.”
