Our work in supporting students with Specific Learning Differences is underpinned by our 7-Principles®, Student Charter, Good Practice Guidelines, and a specialist journal. These tools provide a framework that allows us to most effectively support and empower neurodivergent students to achieve their academic potential.
7-Principles®
The specialist support offered for neurodivergent learners by our members is underpinned by PASSHE’s 7-Principles®:
- metacognition
- motivation
- overlearning
- modelling
- little and often
- multisensory
- relevance
Each of these principles can be used to facilitate a student’s learning experience.
Student Charter
PASSHE’s Student Charter outlines the rights and responsibilities of students receiving personalised support from our Quality Assured (QA) Tutors. These tutors offer confidential, respectful and inclusive one-to-one sessions tailored to students’ academic needs. Our Student Charter ensures equitable, student-centred support, whether in-person or remotely, empowering students to excel in their studies.
Good Practice Guidelines
PASSHE’s Guidelines for Quality Assurance in Specialist Support for Neurodivergent Learners in Higher Education aim:
- to share knowledge and disseminate good practice, including promoting and developing the understanding of all aspects of neurodivergence (such as dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADHD)
- to share and disseminate knowledge of the impact of a neurodivergent profile on mental wellbeing and learning
- to clarify and promote students’ entitlement to neurodivergent support within individual institutions and throughout the sector
The Good Practice Guidelines are not exclusive to PASSHE members, so please do share amongst your networks.
Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct
This defines the standards expected of PASSHE members, ensuring consistent, ethical, and high-quality support for individuals with SpLDs, while providing a basis for accountability.
- Competence and Quality – work within expertise, maintain professional development, and deliver clear, well-informed services.
- Responsibility to Clients – put client needs first, respect diversity, and uphold confidentiality at all times.
- Integrity and Independence – act honestly, avoid conflicts of interest, and maintain professional boundaries.
- Accountability – follow the Code, inform clients of it, and accept consequences for breaches.
Intersectionality Statement
Effective learning can be inhibited or challenged by societal practices which exclude minoritised individuals. According to Crenshaw (1989), inequality can be compounded into a cumulative, negative experience for those whose minoritised identities intersect, such as neurodivergence intersecting with race, class, mental health and gender.
PASSHE recognises the challenges intersecting identities bring within a higher education setting. We will commit to a professional standard that supports students who experience discrimination that results from intersectionality. PASSHE aims to ensure that anti-racist and anti-bias philosophies are embedded within our policies and practises, including providing training for all members.
We seek to enable students to explore how multiple discriminations (e.g. racism, ableism, homophobia, transphobia, sexism, etc.) compound disadvantage within education. Tutors are expected to actively engage in regular reflection to develop their critical perspectives on practice, including the impact of intersectionality on learning.
Journal
Every year PASSHE publishes its own specialist journal titledThe Journal of Neurodivergent Learning and Teaching in Higher Education. Access to the current and previous issues is free. The aim of this publication is to inform, educate and stimulate debate within the SpLD Higher Education sector and beyond.
